Dragon's Back at the Hour the City Fits in Your Palm

The Dragon's Back Trail runs along the ridge of Shek O Peak on Hong Kong Island's southeast side, and it is the hike that convinces visitors that Hong Kong is not just a city of skyscrapers and harbor views but a landscape of mountains, forest, and coastline that would be world-famous if it weren't attached to seven million people. The trailhead is at To Tei Wan, reachable by bus from Shau Kei Wan MTR station, and the ridge walk is 8.5 kilometers of undulating trail that never exceeds moderate difficulty but never stops offering views that make you stop walking and stare.

The ridge itself is the experience — a narrow spine with the South China Sea on both sides, the coast curving away toward Shek O Beach to the east and Big Wave Bay to the south. The vegetation is scrubby — grasses and small trees beaten low by the wind — and the exposure means the views are constant and the light changes with every step as the clouds move across the ridgeline.

At the trail's high point, you can see the entire south coast of Hong Kong Island, the islands of Lamma and Po Toi in the distance, and behind you, over the ridge to the north, the towers of Chai Wan and the harbor beyond. The contrast between the wild, green coast below and the urban density behind is the entire story of Hong Kong compressed into a single panorama.

Best season: October through December, when the air is clear, the humidity drops, and the visibility extends to the horizon. Summer is hazy and hot. Winter is cool and dry and the light is low and golden. Bring water, sunscreen, a hat, and bus fare for the ride back from Shek O. The trail ends at Big Wave Bay, where a cold drink at the beach cafe is the correct conclusion.
