The Hong Kong Sevens Turns 50 at Kai Tak Stadium
The Hong Kong Sevens Turns 50 at Kai Tak Stadium
The most beloved sporting event in Asia celebrates half a century this month. The Cathay/HSBC Hong Kong Sevens 2026 runs April 17–19, and this year is special — the 50th anniversary of what has become the world's greatest rugby sevens festival. The tournament has also moved to the new Kai Tak Stadium, with 40 teams competing in front of 120,000+ fans across three days.
The Sevens is as much a festival as it is a sports event. The stadium stands fill with costumed spectators, the musical acts between matches have become legendary (the Vengaboys headline Saturday, Hindley Street Country Club closes Sunday), and the Village fanzone keeps families entertained with activities between the rugby. Locals and expats mark it on calendars a year in advance.
If you're going: the new Kai Tak Stadium is accessible via the MTR's Kai Tak station on the Tuen Ma Line. Passes sell through Cathay/HSBC affiliates and the Hong Kong Rugby Union. Come in costume if you want to fit in.
